Metals & Mining Industry

Meet market demand with simple testing you can trust

As worldwide interest in batteries and electric vehicles continues to surge, so does mining activity, resource utilization and regulatory oversight. Despite steadily rising commodity prices, mine operators and metal producers still strive for efficiency as they scale up production to meet demand.

Maximizing output and product quality are always top priorities, but in an industry where water use accounts for approximately 15% of overall expenses, so are water conservation efforts. From mineral processing and dust suppression, to slurry transport and drainage, water makes mining possible.

Hach is committed to supporting producers in the metal and mining industry with new product development with recently released TNTplus vial methods for sulfide and cyanide. With this improved cyanide procedure, customers can utilize Hach’s MicroDist distillation tubes to test for total cyanide to meet EPA compliance for gold mining discharge. Hach’s barcode labeled TNTplus vial tests for autodetection, includes tests for total and dissolved metals and NPDES reported parameters for nutrients and organics. The new EZ Series Cyanide Analyzer is an automatic online solution for monitoring cyanide levels, that joins our existing lines for lab chemistry, benchtop instruments, process echem, portable lab instruments, dissolved gases disinfection, inorganics, and controllers.

The right water analytics solutions have the power to affect profitability. Choosing a Hach solution enables operators in the metals and mining industry to:
  • Maintain compliance. Years of development ensure you can do this safely, easily and economically.
  • Maximize uptime. Robust, accurate analytics solutions help manage processes and optimize production.
  • Protect your investment. The right analytics are key to long equipment life, cost savings and compliance.
  • Benefit from partnering. Local technical support and service deliver adapted analytics solutions.

Source Water

Water is essential to metal and mining operations, but industry is seldom the only consumer of water near extraction or processing sites. By monitoring and treating source water, mining companies not only ensure their own quality standards are met, but they also have the opportunity to contribute to the health of communities, agricultural resources, and wild ecosystems in the process. Whether obtained from groundwater or precipitation, oceans or lakes, rivers or streams—or through commercial or municipal supply—the water utilized in mining is interconnected with the water cycle of the entire region.

Water Treatment for Discharge

Because metal and mining operations are often so large and closely associated with surrounding communities and natural landscapes, minimizing the risk of contamination is paramount. Routine monitoring of discharge water ensures compliance with strict standards for temperature, pH and conductivity. In addition, the right monitoring strategy helps manage risks from runoff, extreme storm events, seepage or leakage from storage areas, spills, earthquakes, etc.
